The FLRL has a collection of more than 13,000 volumes predominantly dealing with language, philosophy, arts and culture, medicine, geography, travel, history and the politics of Tibet and the Himalayan region. These materials are primarily in English, but include some in major European and Indian languages, as well as Japanese, Chinese, Russian, and Mongolian. More than 120 journals and periodicals of related interest are currently received and displayed. There is a modest collection of rare and out-of-print books, files of newspaper clippings covering the past 50 years of the Tibetan diaspora, bound collections of periodicals, and files of pamphlets, brochures and other materials concerning the Tibetan community dating back to 1959. Holdings can be accessed through an online cataloguing system. Books are kept in a separate stack room, from where librarians retrieve them on request. The reading room is divided between an area of large open tables and a set of individual study booths.
The continuing expansion of the FLRL collection is matched by its growing number of patrons. New acquisitions are received each year from various sources, in addition to outright purchases. Publication exchange programs provide volumes from other publishers and libraries in exchange for books brought out by the LTWA. Copies of doctoral dissertations are regularly received from University Microfilm International. Books are also donated each year by visiting scholars and by other institutions not formally part of the publication exchange program.
Both the libraries maintain manuscript exchange projects with other institutions around the world. In special cases the institutions provide and exchange photocopies of rare and important works which are otherwise unavailable for general circulation or loan.
SUB-SECTIONS
Chinese Section
As an addition to the ever increasing activities of LTWA, in January this year we opened the Chinese section under the Foreign Language Reference Library. Every year with the influx of more and more Tibetans into India, the number of Tibetans who know and have studied the language have increased. So in order to facilitate them with a place to read and study Chinese books and also to let Chinese students and scholars studying Tibetan Buddhism and language discuss and exchange ideas among them, this section was opened.Till now, this section has a collection of around 3000 books and around 2000 books are being catalogued. Among them, books on Chinese Buddhism are in large numbers and also well-known stories and books on ancient history of China have been well preserved. There are also around 100 books of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama including writings, articles and various other topics translated into Chinese language.
Currently, the section has a two-fold objective of collecting books relating to Tibet and preserving the books received from P.R.C. National Library and Taiwan.
In addition to the current activities, in future we plan to expand our services by providing translation services from Chinese to Tibetan and vice versa and organizing classes wherein the fundamentals of the Chinese language will be taught. With this effort, we hope we would be able to contribute in a small way towards the overall awareness and development of education of Tibetan
